HP Large Format printer does not show total counter or ink levels

If your HP Large Format printer appears in Printerpoint, but doesn't show a total counter or ink levels, there are several possible issues that could cause this.

Printerpoint uses two protocols to connect to an HP large format printer: SNMP and HTTP/HTTPS. If the printer appears in Printerpoint, but does not show a total counter or ink levels, this means the SNMP connection was successful, but the HTTP/HTTPS connection failed.

Issue #1: Printer requires admin credentials

The latest generation of HP printers (XL 3800, T950, etc) require admin credentials to be entered in Printerpoint before we can collect additional data. Instructions on how to set this up can be found here

Issue #2: HTTPS is required, but HTTP traffic is not redirected automatically to use HTTPS

The default configuration on an HP large format printer is to require HTTPS communication, and redirect any HTTP requests to automatically use HTTPS instead of HTTP. If this configuration has been changed, Printerpoint will not be able to communicate with the printer. This configuration option does not exist on the latest generation of HP printers (XL 3800, T950, etc) but is present on older printers.

1. Use Printerpoint Connect to open the web admin page of the printer.

2. Enter the admin credentials and browse to Network > Security > Mgmt Protocols.

3. Confirm "Encrypt all web traffic" is checked

4. If "Block access to insecure http traffic" is checked, uncheck it.

Issue #3: A proxy server is used to control internal web traffic

Some high-security customer sites may have a proxy server or other security features that block internal network traffic. Even if the Printerpoint agent has been configured to communicate outside the network using a proxy server, it is possible that an exception may need to be made to allow internal network traffic between the computer running the Printerpoint Agent and the printer. This is an unusual case, but does occur sometimes at sites with higher security requirements. In this case, consult with the local IT staff to request an exception for HTTPS traffic on port 443 between the computer and the printer.
